Mortlach 2003 Reviews
Tasting notes by Billy Abbott (The Whisky Exchange)
Nose: Green leaves and barley sugar to start. Toffee apples and nuts then begin to appear: a trip to an autumn fairground. Sugared almonds build and begin to dominate, before soft caramel and a hint of green apple meet the challenge and balance everything out.
Palate: The nuttiness continues, with caramel coated almonds joined by baked apples, roasted peaches and pears, and thick toffee sauce. Autumn leaves and freshly sawn oak provide a savoury contrast, along with oatcakes and a handful of Hobnobs.
Finish: The nutty notes linger: hazelnuts and toasted almonds. Sharp fruit follows, softening to sweet and sour apple sauce.
Comment: An intense dram that shows Mortlach doesn't need a sherry cask to be rich and complex.
