Peat Reekers Double Standard70cl / 40%
- Islay Blended Malt Scotch Whisky
A blend of Islay single malts created to celebrate the 'peatreekers': the men and woman who created whisky using illegal stills in 18th century Scotland. Driven to underground distilling due to the introduction of the 1725 Malt Tax, these whisky-makers waged an endless battle with the excisemen and earned the name peatreekers due to the smell of peat that clung permanently to their clothes.
When the excisemen caught a peatreeker, they would often accept a few bottles of whisky as payment for turning a blind eye – a practice which gives this whisky its name: Double Standard.

Tasting notes from the producer
Nose: Fresh wood shavings, honeysuckle and dried apricots with dusty leather-bound books. Salty peat smoke lingers in the background with hints of tarmac and spices.
Palate: Boiled sweets mingle with peat fires and vanilla pods. Then digestive biscuits and milk chocolate. Spicy, smoky and warming with a creamy mouthfeel.
Finish: Long, with wisps of sweet smoke.

As somebody that doesn't often drink whisky, I've found that I return to Peat Reekers time and time again. Complex and smooth. I purchased 4 bottles for my groomsmen at my wedding and they were over the moon!
The flavour profile behind this blended malt is incredible. You get an initial hit of Islay smoke that's met with some sweet, floral notes that help to balance the whisky and provide for a smooth, enjoyable dram. Top marks!
