Port Charlotte's long-awaited 10 year old, rich and smoky whisky made by the independently minded folks at Bruichladdich distillery on Islay. PC, as it's known to its friends, is heavily peated to 40ppm, putting it up with Islay's other heavy hitters. The resulting whisky is big and peaty with a maritime tang – the Bruichladdich team would claim that it's because their warehouses are so close to the sea, we're still undecided. In the end, the most important thing is the taste: it's rather good.

Nose
Toffee and vanilla fudge jump out before we dive into a bucket of singed raisins and smouldering peat bricks. Green grass and leafy notes poke out around the edges along with candied lemons and flamed orange peel.
-
Palate
A sweet creamy hit up front leads into lemon boiled sweets. black-pepper spice and a thick layer of peaty smoke. The green edges from the nose are back, with richer notes of stewed apples and sultanas, and a touch of vanilla toffee.
-
Finish
Menthol throat sweets and sweet smoke slowly fade to leave grilled apples and buttery pastry.

For its price this is an absolute belter. Not surprised it won whisky of the year, I would be hard pushed to name a better whisky at this price point. I tend to drink Ardbeg, Lagavulin, Laphroaig and Octomore so I'm definitely a Islay fan, and this definitely holds its own amongst those. Highly recommended.

Excellent value for money at less than £50. Incredibly smooth for something that is 50% ABV. Happily buy again.

I'm a big fan of Islay malts and this is certainly the best one I have tried in this price range! Certainly deserves all the accolades. Even my wife enjoyed it and she is not normally a lover of Islay malts! I shall need to lock the bottle away!
