A favourite of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, being conveniently situated close by Balmoral Castle. Royal Lochnagar was originally a key ingredient in VAT 69, but most production is now for single malts.Tasting Notes (2)
Not obvious to begin with. Planed wood, light toffee, boat varnish. Linseed oil behind, even putty, and later a lychee-like acidity. With water the acidity comes through (acid drops), and the nose sweetens. Still a pleasant fresh woodiness, followed by warm sand. After a while, coffee with brown sugar.
Pleasant; an initial sweetness is quickly overtaken by acidity.
Dry; medium-length, with an attractive lingering sandalwood aftertaste.
Tasting Notes by Dave Broom for Whisky Advocate
Diageo's smallest distillery and another that has worm tubs. The character here is grassy: think hay and straw rather than lawn clippings. There's just a hint of cereal behind, and a fresh, roasted spiciness. The palate has good central sweetness where you just get a hint of fruit. Light and fresh, and a good afternoon dram.
More from Royal Lochnagar
This is lovely stuff at the lighter end of the spectrum. Sweet,, malty, clean and with a light vanilla oak influence. If you have never tried Dallas Dhu this will give you an idea of that iconic dram at a fraction of the price.
Very well balanced
We really enjoy Royal Lochnagar 12 year old scotch. Very smooth. This purchase replenished a bottle from our visit to Scotland.
Fine, fine finish. Worth the import. Delicate taste.
Best whisky for the price on the planet, smooth from start to stop
