Tasting Notes

  • Tasting notes by Billy Abbott, The Whisky Exchange

Nose: Raspberries, cherries and blackcurrants sprinkled on top of a bowl of milky cornflakes...then doused in kerosene and set on fire. Oily smoke and sweet fruit almost mask the underlying grain character, but it just about stands up to the assault.

Palate: The grain comes forward on the palate, accompanied by syrupy sweetness. Gravelly smoke rolls down the sides of the tongue. The fruit still hangs around, but it's swamped by the sweetness. A drop of water brings out even more sweetness, as well as some balancing bitter fruit skins.

Finish: Raspberry sauce, cornflakes and fragrant peat smoke. The smoke lingers.

Comment: Definitely youthful, but if you like port and smoke you're in for a treat, with zingy peaty spirit providing the perfect base for layers of red fruit.

Terrific Islay, something a little different with a deep Islay peated whisky dominates but the red berry sweet undertones are a very welcome complexity along with the 50%abv.
