Inspired by Captain Bill Grant Smith, great grandson of Glenlivet's founder, Captain's Reserve is finished in casks that previously held Cognac – a process that creates distinctive notes of raisin and honey within this creamy, citrusy single malt.

I received this as a gift from my brother. It is a very dark coloured spirit with a massive taste. Very smooth and rich with a long aftertaste. Slightly sweet with all sorts of flavours. The whole effect is marvellous and well worth trying it. I wholeheartedly recommend this whisky.

I assume this is the same as the 14 Year finished in cognac sold in the US. If it is, first and foremost, drink it neat. Here’s why. On ice the nose is maple bacon, salt crystals on Serrano ham, cognac, tart apple and Glenlivet. I taste purple grapes with natural white powder on them, plus rose petals, that fades to immature oak tannin char, peppery spice and vanillin (not vanilla), sandalwood, leather, peat moss, grape leaves, cocoa, communion wine, my ex girlfriend’s matte blackberry colored lipstick and the musty mold flavor that could only come from licking a brick on the wall of an underground cavern in France, that is lined with cobwebs and thousand year old skulls. I once knew a guy who was really into cognac, who explained why you have to drink it at room temperature or warmer, I wasn’t paying attention to his explanation, but he knew what he was talking about, so I tried this neat. Without ice I get a nose of toasted marshmallow, fine cognac, fresh grape leaves and grape vines. On the palate, I get purple grape skin with natural white powder, fading to fresh grape leaves, immature oak tannins and Glenlivet char. I don’t like drinking scotch neat, but in this case it is a must. It’s like single malt cognac, plus oak, minus the silly glass.

The box says Rich and Intense but it is not the case. Not to say I am pouring it down the drain. It has a decent caramel flavour and the finish is not bad. It is just boring. This whiskey is overpriced.
