Suntory Hibiki 17 Year Old Reviews

Tasting Notes

  • Tasting Notes by Mark Gillespie, World Whiskies Awards 2012

Mild smokiness and toasted oak with hints of nutmeg. Lemon-lime citrus at first, followed by a strong cinnamon blast that fades slowly into the finish as the citrus note returns. Hints of hazelnut, and fading cinnamon.
  • Tasting Notes by Robin Laing, World Whiskies Awards 2012

The nose gives tempura cooking oil, donuts, candyfloss and coconut fudge. A warm, pleasant taste of fruity toffee, barley sugar sticks dipped in chocolate and marron glacés, with an attractive heat playing around the mouth.
  • Producer's Note

Hibiki, which means harmony, is a master blend of carefully selected full-bodied malt and grain whiskies. This multi award winning blend creates a profound aroma with an elegant and mellow woody richness, accompanied by sweet long-lasting citrus flavour.

  • Tasting Notes by Dave Broom

Nose: Ripe soft and pillow like with hints of smoke and toasty wood. Citrus leaf, cocoa, cooked apricot, ripe banana, hazelnut giving a crunch.

Palate: Toffee sweetness stretches along the palate. Very clean and clear. Sweet with sultana and cherry.

    Finish: Long and silky.

Comment: Relaxed and laid back. This is excellent blending.

    Score: 8.5 / 10

  • Tasting notes by Martine Nouet

Nose:  Bee wax, polished floor, church bench, candle wax.  A tar hint in the back.  When aerated, opens up on citrussy notes and barley sugar before a wave of vanilla brings in a sweet brine.

Palate:  Smooth, mellow. Velvety.  Oak and citrus fruit are intertwined in an elegant two step dance.

Finish:  Medium, smooth, hardening up on a more assertive oaky note.  Touch of bitter chocolate.

Comments:  An elegant and satisfying dram.  Well educated, in good quality casks for sure.

    Score:  8.25 / 10

Sweet aromatic wood chips dipped in a simple syrup. Banana leaf, plantain and madagascar vanilla. Lemon peel, toffee cereal with no peat and subtle on the palate. Soft floral notes, smooth, and rich with body. Exceptionally enjoyable and definitely will buy another bottle. Love what Japanese whiskies bring to the table.

Just ordered this for my husbands christmas gift. I really hope he likes it. I did a lot of research on the Hibiki 17. We will be moving to japan in April and I wanted to get him a Japanese type since I''m pretty sure he has never tried it before. But wish me luck I''m excited I hope he likes it

For relaxing times, make it Suntory time. This is a great whisky, to my untrained palate it was a little smokey at first but over the years I've really come to appreciate all the complexities inside this bottle (which is sublime too, I don't want to throw it away afterwards...). Now that I'm on the verge of finishing my first bottle I'm tempted to buy a second but it seems to have gotten a fair bit pricier since last time.

This really does blow other blends out of the water. Stunningly smooth and drinkable. Never liked blends before this...

  • Rychie 15 June 2013

Very attractive whisky. Clean nose, a hit of lovely smokiness that snakes all around your mouth, and a delicious aftertaste that lingers just long enough for you to want another sip . Normally out of my league, but just had a double for under a fiver at Wetherspoons in Stourbridge, West Midlands. Judging by the price,an absolute steal. Do try it if you're lucky enough.

Absolutely amazed by this Whiskey, my local was serving and warned me it wasn't the cheapest, Having ignored them, I was treated to a truly amazing whiskey, smooth, sweet, subtle fragrance leaving a long enough finish to respect what you're drinking, the fact it's a blend seems to work in its favour as some blends ( johnny Walker blue label) can't compete with this. A subtle dram with enough impact. Time to raid the piggy bank

First had this in a Japanese restaurant in Glasgow and figured the Scots really need to watch out! I like a whisky with subtle flavors, preferably caramels and toffee. You get that here but with added mystery. You see that in the professionals' reviews - no one can put their finger on it. But they know its very good!

  • Chris , UK 1 February 2012

A friend of mine suggested I tried the hibiki 17yr and he was not wrong. it is without doubt the finest whisky i've had to date. I just wish I could afford the 30yr old to try that as well. Truely worthy winner of the awards it has already gained.

Absolutely exquisite.... liquid silk, cherries jasmine and an array on spices finished with ginger and cardamon... superb...

My son bought me some back from Japan, it is probably the best I have tasted, keep the Scotch for others the Hibiki for me!

I sampled this in a hotel bar the evening before I went on holiday. I was utterly blown away by it, then and now. It's a firm fixture in my drinks cabinet and never fails to impress.

  • Anonymous 18 March 2011

Love it. Usually I?m into heavy smoky whisky like Lagavulin but this one is now a favourite of mine as well. My liquor-shell will always have a bottle of this, thats for sure.
