Our Whisky of the Year for 2022, this 18-year-old Highland malt is matured entirely in first-fill Bourbon casks, dialling up Deanston’s trademark tropical fruit and honey character to eleven and reinforcing it with rich American oak notes of butter and vanilla. Fantastic stuff.Tasting Notes (1)
For most of its life, Deanston was one of Scotland’s great workhorse distilleries – dutifully turning out stock for blenders. But in recent years it has emerged as a rising star of the single malt category. The Deanston core range offers a masterclass in contemporary whisky making: it contains malts made from Scottish barley, bottled at 46.3% ABV as standard, and offered without colouring or chill-filtration. Add the fact that each one is made using sustainable hydroelectric power and you have the perfect dram for the 21st century.
Billy Abbott, The Whisky Exchange
Well-balanced toffee and zingy lemons are joined by notes of biscuits and patisserie – shortbread and Danish pastries. Malty notes build but are balanced by candied citrus, sharp fresh and sweet baked apples with a dusting of cinnamon sugar. Fruit pushes through middle: sultanas and peats, with a pinch of nutmeg and cherry hints.
Creamy with the toffee and biscuits from the nose. The toffee quickly turns fruity, bring back rich stewed apple sauce – both sour and sweet – with plump sultanas and slightly unripe pears. Aniseed-ball heat builds, followed by vanilla shortbread rolled in cinnamon sugar.
Apple peel and lemon zest fade to leave spiced shortbread, apple pips and almonds.

I8 years in first fill Bourbon casks, I love it. I'm a big fan of the 12yr, but this is deeper and richer in smell and taste, the finish for me is a lingering sweet apple shortbread, just love this dram. As someone has stated at this price very hard to beat and at 46.3% great work Deanston. As always great work packers :-)
This is weirdly a malt that has passed me by for some time. The 12 was my first ever whisky a few years back, and I have tried so many other whiskies, yet for some reason not this one. Wow have I been missing out. INCREDIBLE. You can taste the Dunnage warehouse effect which isn’t common. Absolutely love this old style of single malt!
Seriously dram. Beats anything else I have tasted at £70
Strange that I’m the first to score this dram. I found the Deanston 12 quite brilliant. The 18 is also fantastic; slightly more reserved and elegant with more complexity. Sweet barley and honey. Not rich or cloying, but balanced and zingy. Great finish.
