Arran 1996 Reviews
Tasting notes by Billy Abbott (The Whisky Exchange)Nose: Rich and sweet sherry cask notes: sultanas, plump raisins, spiced sponge cake and candied orange peel. Lighter orchard fruit notes build: stewed apple, apple strudel and poached pear. Sugared almonds emerge, along with zesty lemon and a hint of fino sherry dryness.
Palate: Thick cream stirred through with mixed berries: raspberry, blackcurrant and strawberry. Raisins and spice follow, balanced by a touch of bitter char and sour cherries. The spice becomes malt loaf, although sweetness is controlled. Rich and dark notes of fruit cake and black bread are joined by molasses and black liquorice.
Finish: Liquorice and spice fade to leave stewed apple, raisins and damp leaves.
Comment: An excellently-balanced Arran, with sherry notes and the distillery's classic fruity character in harmony.
