Tasting Notes
Tasting Notes
Tasting notes by Billy Abbott (The Whisky Exchange)
Nose
Spiced butter, ginger bread, butter icing, hints of mint and underlying rich fruitiness – sultanas and raisin jam. Spiced cake batter and mixed peel follow, with candied lemon notes developing.
Palate
Rich and thick on the palate, with spiced caramel and hints of barrel char bitterness. Toffee and sultanas build, with more gingerbread, stewed orchard fruit and soft spice.
Finish
Butterscotch and spiced fruitcake fade to leave sweet muscat grape skins and rich baked apple.
Comment
The top of the Spots, with more weight, more age and more complexity than its younger siblings. It still has the Spot-y elegance, but also extra oomph from the age and casks.

It’s very nice but if you want a five star top tier Irish whisky crack open a Redbreast 21 or a Bushmills 21
I am quite familiar with Green and Yellow Spot, and recently had my first taste of Red. To my palate, Green and Yellow share a strong family resemblance with the Yellow definitely smoother. The Red is a different animal altogether, having strong dark fruity notes the others don't have. It's rich, deep and earthy while the other spots are more crisp and peppery.
I tried this whisky at Whisky Show 2022. It is outstanding.
Had Red Spot about two years ago when it first came out. Really liked it. It is now very hard to find in the US. Found it at the Whiskey Exchange for a decent price and with shipping it is still cheaper than what is on the secondary market here. Having a 15 year old whiskey comparison next month with Redbreast 15, Tyrconnell 15 Medeira and Red Spot (finished with among other things Marsala). Looking forward to an interesting tasting with three outstanding whiskeys. The shipping to the US was fast and much much better than my dealings with FEDEX.
Holiday spice on the nose Sharp bite with heat that mellows quickly to a caramelized butterscotch cake Finish is medium with a buttery maple glazed scone on the end.
