A limited-edition release from independent bottler Wemyss Malts, part of their Batch Strength series. Peat Chimney is a blend of single malts chosen for their peaty character, creating a whisky with aromas of sea salt, fresh seaweed and peat smoke. The palate offers smoky, spicy notes of paprika, ginger and peat, before mellowing into notes of fresh apples, lemon sherbets and sea-salt.

    Getting whisky as a gift is, of course, a magnificent event. It is made doubly so when it is a bottle that you would not have thought to have purchased yourself. This one epitomises the point of blended malts as layer upon layer of well considered flavours ride across the palate. The smoke and peat are subtle and balanced with spice and what I find a curious (but pleasant) aftertaste of fresh fruit. I see this malt as an excellent introduction to other even peatier offerings. Well balanced.
