A specially-selected whiskey bottled just for The Whisky Exchange. When we tried a sample of this rare amburana-matured whiskey, we immediately asked WhistlePig if we could have some as an exclusive, and after much begging they said yes. This 12-year-old Indiana-distilled rye whiskey was finished by WhistlePig in a a cask made of south-American amburana wood. It's very rarely seen in whisky-making, more commonly being used to age cachaca, and it adds a unique fragrant character to the whiskey that makes it like nothing else. Fragrant wood, with coconut, tonka bean, glacé cherry, mint fondant, pine resin, fresh cut grass, butter-icing and sultana-studded fairy cakes all popping up. Cherry Bakewells, minty spongecakes and a freshly mown field.
More coconut starts us off: Lamingtons and milk-chocolate Bounty bars. Mint and toasted spice builds through the centre, followed by creamy sweetness and a touch of balancing green grassiness. Darker notes of brown sugar and treacle hide at the bottom.
Grassy notes fade to leave chocolate, creamy coffee, coconut and green apples.
One of the most unique whiskies I have ever tried. The coconut and mint notes lead to a complex cavalcade of flavours, all wrapped around a delicately spiced rye-whiskey core.
