Aird Mhor 2009 / 9 Years Old / The Whisky Exchange
Product Description

While you wouldn't necessarily expect one of Scotland's favourite smoky drams to come from the Highlands, Ardmore has been distilling peaty spirit for years and has been quietly sneaking up the leaderboard. This Aird Mhor bottling is not only a peaty dram itself, but was matured for 9 years in a cask that used to hold Laphroaig. The result is a whisky that marries together Ardmore's heathery smoke with a touch of the Islay stalwart's medicinal and fruity character. Flowers, fruit, smoke – it's got it all! A hit at Whisky Show 2019.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

  • Billy Abbott, The Whisky Exchange

    • Nose

Damp grass and wet autumn bonfires. Greenness leads the way at first, opening up to reveal coastal brininess, a hint of TCP and loads of fruity sweetness. Grilled pineapple, apple and sweet pear are joined by toffee and fudge, with a touch of gravelly minerality to balance things.

    • Palate

Loads of sweet smoke up front, with apple purée and flamed orange zest tempered by rich and earthy peat. Candied apples follow with dark chocolate, green leave and damp twigs: eating Bournville in a rainy copse. The minerality from the nose returns, balanced by toffee sweetness and rich earth.

    • Finish

Chocolate limes, sweet apple sauce and dark peat smoke. Earthy spice lingers.

    • Comment

Complex, fruity and elegant. It’s got a solid core of Ardmore highland smoke, but it’s all wrapped in a Laphroaig-soaked bandages – fruity and medicinal. A well-balanced masterpiece.

Lovely whisky, smokey, peaty with a hint of zesty fruits such as lemons and green apples bottled at cask strength with no colouring and no chill filtration and priced right, excellent. Highly recommended.
