Tasting Notes by Dr Whisky
-
Cigarette smoking through a meal of scrambled eggs, scallops, and strawberry cheescake. Pears, a bag of marijuana, cinnamon.
Sea salt, kelp, lemon cheesecake, a cloud of peat, peaches or nectarines, firesmoke.
SUMMARY:
Amazing balance from start to finish. Peat and iodine to fruit baskets then burning leaves or wood outdoors. Distinct compartments of flavour that harmonise masterfully, if all a bit too consonant, major thirds and fifths. Monstrous? Cookie monster, maybe.

I'm going to be honest, this one really doesn't deliver on the name. It's a good whiskey to be sure, but it's very mild in terms of smoke, barely even reaching Talisker levels. When I hear something called PEAT MONSTER I'm thinking of something more along the lines of Octomore. If you want a real peat monster in the same price range go for the Lagavulin 8yr, Laphroiag 10yr, or Ardbeg Uigeadail.

The very best blended malt I’ve come across globally, a proper whisky bottled at proper strength with no colouring

This is one of my favourites. I cannot believe how affordable this whisky is. To me, this brings me to a campfire at a ocean beach where I'm eating fruits. The nose is amazing. The taste and finish are really good. I wouldn't call this overly peaty at all. If anything, it's more sea-brine than smoke. They are really nicely balanced. Thinking about it makes my mouth water. I keep reaching forward financially to find something that engages me a little more. It looks like I need to spend about 4x the money for a bottle that is more enjoyable (to me).

I absolutely love Islay Scotch and this is the best of a bunch of offerings. It's a poor mans Lagavulin 16, and amazingly complex for the price (roughly $20-$25cdn cheaper than Laphroaig or Ardbeg) but still Coal Ila hits and what is the fruity single malt they add to balance the finish?! Does anyone know?!

I had never tried a Compass Box offering before I went to their distillery presentation at Twin Liquors. Thought so highly of the Peat Monster ?? that I bought a bottle. It definitely won't be my last. Highly recommended.
