A litre-bottle of orange-based liqueur with a bittersweet flavour, Picon is best served as an aperitif, but is also frequently mixed with wine, in which it tastes a lot better than you might expect.
Picon transforms a very ordinary lager beer into something wonderfully fruity and evocative of long summer evenings in France.
My husband enjoyed this addition to his beer while we were in Paris. It cannot be purchased in the US. I found it on this site. It was out of stock, but they emailed me when it was in. It’s very expensive to ship to the US, so I bought 2 bottles. It arrived within 2 weeks of the order date. I was kept updated on shipping. I did have to sign for the package, since it’s alcohol. It was packed with plenty of cushion. We haven’t opened it yet, so I can’t review the flavor, but I’m sure it’s the same. This review is really about the company.
In Alsace, where my mother-in-law is from, this liqueur is most often mixed with beer, often together with a lemon syrup of some kind. I would say approximately a double shot mixed into a beer is a common amount--more or less according to taste.
Since 1997 and my first visit to France, being introduced to Picon Club, my home has NEVER been without stock. The reason I am on line, this is the first time I have been down to my last bottle. Need a supplier in the UK
I see that Amer Picon is down to 18% (365 proof). Oh for the grand old days of Amer Segalas, the premier Picon that had been manufactured in San Francisco since the 1860s, but unfortunately the family couldn't compete with the big distributors. They were 78 proof and better taste that the French dimishing proof version.
