Mortlach 2008 / 12 Year Old / Signatory for TWE
Product Description

A non-typical Mortlach from Signatory Vintage, specially selected by and bottle for us here at The Whisky Exchange. It was distilled on 13 March 2008 and bottled on 5 May 2020 after 12 years maturing in a first-fill bourbon cask. Less meaty and weight than many whiskies from the distillery, this dram combines a buttery texture with fruit, vanilla and herbs. A moreish and tasty take on Mortlach.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

  • Billy Abbott, The Whisky Exchange

    • Nose

Barley sugar, green apples and a touch of woody spice – a toffee apple munched down to the stick. Vanilla notes build, with the apple sweetening and joined by whipped cream and toffee sauce, Notes of coconut macaroons and Dolly Mixtures develop.

    • Palate

The Dolly Mixtures are back, leading to more of the sharp apple notes from the nose. The vanilla has become a weighty custard, followed by a touch of spicy oak and damp forest. Gently woody spice builds, with touches of fragrant resin, aniseed and mint chocolate.

    • Finish

Soft, rounded and long: buttery with baking spices, hints of anise and sweet polished oak.

    • Comment

A dive into Mortlach’s spirit, not covered by a layer of sherry cask as it so usually is – weighty, fruity and herbal with the cask adding soft spice and a creamy texture.

Absolutely gorgeous. Sweet slightly lemony with a long lasting vanilla after taste. Must add a drop of water to release the delicious flavour. Goes well with black pudding and scallops.

I am not a Mortlach regular. I tend to go for Campbelltown, Arran or integrity highlands. So this was a bit of a gamble. But it paid off. I really enjoy the vanilla, herbaceous and wood spice. It's very interesting and well-balanced. I would drink this before or after dinner, maybe even watching the rugby one afternoon.
