A smoky limited-edition blended malt whisky from indie bottler Compass Box, Peat Monster Arcana explored the effect of maturing peated whisky in toasted French oak casks. Aromas of chocolate, tar and cinnamon fill the nose, complemented by notes of lemons, baked apples, vanilla and beeswax on the palate, with rich waves of peat smoke throughout.

The Compass Box Arcana is a lovely whisky. As you would expect, smoke is to the fore, but followed by honeyed sweetness and warm spices that balance the experience. Salt and pepper there as well reflecting the high proportion of Talisker in the blend. Another cracker from Compass Box. The only negative is the price being a little on the high side - it is competing against some very good drams at that price point. At £50 - £60 it would have got 5 stars.

After you have nosed and tasted this whisky the question that comes to mind is 'Where is the monster?'. This is a polite and well behaved whisky which tastes more of lemons than a lemonade. It should be enjoyed whether you love peated whisky or not. It is a good whisky but the price is a little steep.

The question is 'Where is the Monster?'. This is a very well behaved whisky which can be enjoyed by everyone whether they love peated whisky or not. For me lemons are to the fore. Enjoyable but a little steep at this price.
