Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

  • Billy Abbott, The Whisky Exchange

    • Nose

A fruit bowl to start: pears and raspberries with some zingy redcurrants and zest lemons. Sweet butter and sugar sandwiches on white-bread are balanced by polished oak and woody spice, with barley sugar and lemon drops hiding at the back.

    • Palate

Thick and sweet, with the fruit from the nose alternately jammy and poached, with liquorice and damp oak sneaking in behind. Blackcurrant jam and mint cream notes develop, along with sweet, creamy custard and grated 100% cocoa dark chocolate.

    • Finish

Custard and jam lead to dark oak, gentle char and liquorice pastilles.

    • Comment

A big, fruity whisky which balances fresh and darker flavours against sweetness and oaky spice.

    Dan,

Im a big fan of Glen Elgin. Its one of those distilleries that isnt well known by the masses …. yet. This particular bottling is such a find for its price point. Glen Elgin tends to really shine in independent bottlings and this is no exception. Sweet, fruity and spicy. Lovely stuff.

    James,

Great value for money. Classic Glen Elgin tinned pear kind of taste with a few berries on top (blackcurrants, raspberries, etc.). Not the most complex whisky in the world, but everything you can expect from a 12 year old. A great buy.

    Not Sam,

Considering the ABV it isn’t that aggressive. It’s flavourful with a mixture of sweet and spicy. Not for someone who’s knew to whisky. Not because it’s a monster like Laphroig or even worse Port Charlotte, but to find the flavours is a bit of a task. Great whisky and would easily buy again.

    Ach,

Classic bourbon-cask goodness. Far too many current offerings taste just like the bourbon from the barrels they're aged in. Not this one. Boozy fruit salad on the nose, tart granny smith apples and vanilla frosting on the palate, and some sawdust to finish, but the wonderfully oily spirit still shines through. Highly recommended.
