The first release in Tobermory distillery's Sinclair Series, this smoky Ledaig single malt has been made with heavily-peated barley and finished in hand-selected Rioja casks. Aromas of Turkish Delight, candied orange peel, leather, black pepper and dark chocolate fill the nose, complemented by notes of almond, raspberries, vanilla, cinnamon and freshly cut grass on the palate over rich waves of savoury peat smoke.

OK, I have it here in front of me - second tasting. I've always liked very much whatever I've tasted out of the Ledaig stable, but from the photo seeing a whisky the same colour as Irn Bru made me suspicious. But it's also good value, so I bought it. The colour on arrival is the same as in the photo. It's bonkers orange. Though poured out into my glass it becomes more like a soft Anjou Rosé... still weird for whisky. Really, does the colour come from the cask? Or was it added later? ...anyhow, the first thing I imagined encountering was a hoof of furniture polish, but no, not so. OK, maybe a little.... but it's mild. On the nose there's tangerines and (whoever mentioned Turkish Delight, you were spot on!) Turkish Delight. Both of these continue in the mouth... it's really fruity. But also you get the overalls of young whisky. There's no depth of aged barley, so the notes the rioja barrel bring to this are up-front. I'm on my second dram... I've never tasted anything like this. I'm taken back to the first time I ever ate a Maraschino cherry. Then... right at the very end you get the peaty an slightly smoky ending you experience from more savoury whiskies. It shouldn't work, but it's actually quite nice. But weird. I'm imagining what an aged version of this might be like, just enough to take the youth off it. At the moment it's a very interesting whisky, unlike anything else I've tasted (in 30 years of whisky drinking) and brave of the distillers to experiment like this. It's probably not a bottle I'd buy again, but I'm happy I did.
Ledaig Sinclair is mellow, mystical and mouthwatering delight. Rich, warming and bursting with mid-winter flavours. Straight to the top of favourites list.
