A Perfect Measure sample bottle of the seventh release of Balvenie Tun 1509 – a combination of 21 hand-selected casks - four American oak barrels, 10 sherry butts and seven hogsheads - that have spent three in a traditional marrying tun. Rich aromas of oak, dried fruits, raisins, dates, ground ginger and brown sugar fill the nose. The palate offers notes of tangy candied orange peel, oaky vanilla, golden syrup, honeycomb, toasted hazelnuts, ginger and nutmeg that linger in the finish.

I was expecting a sherry forward Tun given the amount of sherry hogshead and refill sherry cask that was being used, but was surprised by the spiciness of this whisky. While the nose is sherry forward, the palate and finish are definitely more influenced by the oak characteristic. I think its a great whisky from Balvenie!
