Following on from Very Young and Still Young, Ardbeg Almost There showed the final stage in the evolution of young cask-strength Ardbeg 1998 before it blossomed into the Renaissance 10 yr-old. As you would expect, this is a mellower, more rounded, better balanced dram than the younger incarnations.

Wet turf & wet wool to begin with, then gets very earthy with distinct bonfire aromas - more woodsmoke than coal. Like burning loose, wet, young peat rather than the heavy, dense, older stuff.

Noticeably smoother than the Very Young and Still Young, its predecessors in this series. Very approachable, with a more pronounced sweetness sitting well alongside the lemon, brine and smoke that so characterise the younger bottlings.

Sweet and salty, with the peat mixing with some faint hints of legumes (runner beans, fresh sugar snap peas) and still plenty of spice.
Comment
It is just fascinating to taste this alongside the two earlier versions and the Renaissance - to chart the development of one of the world's greatest malts from its infancy. As one would expect, this version is more balanced and complete than its younger siblings.
Producer's Tasting Notes
Aromas of peat bogs, moss and birch, tar interlaced with waxed lemons and fudge. Chewy fudge smoke, mouthcoating tangy orange oil, violets and chocolate.

A fantastic Whisky. Peat, Smoke, Sweetness and lots of power and saltiness. Everything well balanced. Punch in your face at first and then beautiful flavors and a long long finish.

Nice combination of peat, sea salt and fruity character. I realized that after Uigeadail and Corryvreckan my expectation with Ardbeg were so high that somehow this was not so impressive as I had expected. Still, a must have dram for all Ardbeg fans.
why is it that this is more expensive that the still young bottle which is older (release date wise), guessing its the number of bottles released - but does anyone know the numbers? Or perhaps it because it tastes better?
I got my dad this for christmas, he collects whisky and seemed really happy.
