A Perfect Measure sample bottle of spicy, sweet bourbon from Frey Ranch, made with a combination of corn, winter cereal rye, winter wheat and two-row barley grown in the Sierra Nevada Watershed. Aromas of orange, honey, cinnamon and candied peel fill the nose, complemented by notes of vanilla, caramel, mint, banana, candy corn, hay and black pepper throughout the palate.

    I was hesitant in trying a Nevada bourbon - not sure I'd ever seen one before, but I was absolutely delighted I went for it and got a bottle. On opening there is a fantastic aroma of dark fruits almost blackberry jam with the usual notes of a bourbon in vanilla, oak and caramel. In the mouth it is pleasant and clean. On tasting those flavours only intensify but a spicy or peppery note is introduced which is extremely pleasant. I'm going to say this is up there (and better than) a Michters or Four Roses, which is a bold statement as they are 5 star bourbons for me. This has a little bit more complexity and character for me and that's why it goes up there as the best bourbon I've ever bought (not tasted mind...I can't afford a whole bottle of Pappy Van Winkle 20 Year Old! Great work Frey Ranch.

    I really trust the reviews from the WE community, so I'm often hesitant to be the first to take the plunge, but I'm mighty glad I did. This is a mature, elegant bourbon for those who want to think outside the Kentucky box. It gives a fresh and spicy nose with apricot and pear drops coming through nicely with a hint of pepper. The taste is fresher and dryer than southern bourbons, not as sweet but that's not to say it lacks depth. There is a nice creme brulee/burnt caramel flavour with that fruit boiled sweets hit and a touch of banana and herb. A little water or ice opens it up, lessens the rye hit and let's the more luxuriant vanillas through. Lovely whisky that really offers something different in a splendid bottle, the stopper is a hefty bronze monster, I'll be using it as a paperweight!
