Product Description

The very first rum from Taiwan’s Renaissance distillery to land in the UK, this single cask expression was bottled exclusively for customers of The Whisky Exchange. It’s an intensely aromatic spirit, packed with all the big tropical fruit notes we love to find in pot still rum. Finishing in a single fino sherry cask brings great umami and a distinctly herbal edge to a palate of banana, pineapple and mango.

A superb debut from one of the most interesting rum producers operating in the world today.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

  • Billy Abbott, The Whisky Exchange

    • Nose

Rich, buttered, roasted bananas with a touch of overripe banana funkiness. Soft spiced-butter notes build, joined by even more fruit: tinned pineapple and peach with ripe fresh mango and a touch of sharp apple.

    • Palate

Slightly singed toffee leads, poured over a bucket of bananas. A hint of green follows: freshly picked leaves, tarragon and mint. Clove spiciness explodes through the middle, followed by growing green anise and star anise. A surprise punch of vanilla butter cookies pops up at the end.

    • Finish

Liquorice, green banana, brown sugar, tarragon and fresh grass linger for a long time.

Renaissance 2018 Fino Cask

The Renaissance team pride themselves on being fully transparent about how they make their rums, and as this rum’s back label demonstrates, they really don’t hide anything. In summary: this traditional pot-still rum was distilled on 17 September 2018 and bottled in May 2021; it’s made using molasses refined from local Taiwanese sugar cane, which was fermented with wine yeast for 15 days with dunder; it was distilled on the lees and matured in a new 225-litre American white-oak cask and finished in a fino sherry cask; and it was bottled at full cask strength with no added colour, sugar or flavourings. And that’s not even all the information on the back label!

About Renaissance Distillery

Taiwan is becoming increasingly well-known for its spirits and Renaissance is expanding that reputation into the world of rum. The island is full of sugar cane and Renaissance was founded in 2017 to create uniquely Taiwanese rums using local ingredients. Distiller Olivier Caen is dedicated to experimentation, playing with the rum-making process from cane to cask all in the search of great flavour.
