Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

  • Billy Abbott, The Whisky Exchange

    • Nose

Smoky bacon with a squeeze of lemon juice to start. Burning leaf notes build in the glass along with a touch of gravel, freshly uncurled ferns and damp leaves. The leafy notes continue to develop, turning from fresh to smouldering.

    • Palate

Rich and thick in texture with sweet smoke and dark chocolate followed by chocolate lime sweets, spiced chocolate biscuits and a touch of honey. Burning green leaf notes develop, joined by singed lemon and lime peel with a squeeze of juice.

    • Finish

A burst of ashy smoke fades to leave baked apples, dark chocolate and sweet honey.

    Anonymous,

A gorgeous dram IMHO from an exceptional cask. I very much like the blunt Ballechin peat (as opposed to the sharp Islay peat). The smoke is beautifully integrated with the rich fruity Edradour spirit and an active refill bourbon cask. The result is a wonderful dram that is rich and complex, smooth and bright. I find the chocolate, lime, and honey notes salient and beautifully complementary. The tasting notes mention vegetal funkiness, but I don't experience this. The dram seems much cleaner and more elegant than these particular notes imply. Perhaps this is what I'm experiencing as blunt peat, which again is well integrated with everything else. One of my all time favourite peated whiskies.
