What is Pineaudes Charentes?

Often called a fortified wine, Pineau des Charentes is a fruity and refreshing drink that’s not actually made with any wine at all. It’s a combination of either unfermented grape juice — either red or white — and young Cognac that is then aged in oak barrels to marry the ingredients and produce something that’s a beloved aperitif in the Cognac region. Legend has it that the drink was first discovered when a winemaker poured just-distilled Cognac into a barrel of unfermented wine they thought was empty but, much like the drink, that’s best accompanied by a morsel of something salty.

Balvenie French Oak

Eight Years in the making

It was the Balvenie’s US brand ambassador, Lorne Cousin, who originally suggested finishing some of their whisky in Pineau casks, after he and his family enjoyed the aperitif on a trip to the region. Balvenie’s malt master, David Stewart MBE, may not have thanked him for the idea, as it took more than eight years to find the casks which would marry perfectly with their whisky!

AboutThe Balvenie

One of the original seven stills of Dufftown, Balvenie has been in business since 1892. It’s storied history is full of experimentation, a spirit of curiosity that has been passed down through the generations. Though the distillery boasts an open-minded approach to distilling and maturation, it also maintains a connection with tradition. Today it is one of only seven distilleries in Scotland to operate a floor maltings on-site. It’s not the easiest way to get malted barley, or the cheapest, but having direct control over the raw materials has allowed Balvenie to remain creative.

    Average!,

Perhaps a price range of £70-90 would help it!

    Jim,

At first I thought I had erred in my purchase but after several months I came back to it. I was surprised at how much I began to enjoy it. It certainly has been a nice change from the sherry based malts I have been drinking from Glendronach, Hazelburn and Dalmore. It is a solid bottling from Balvenie and I am glad for my purchase.

    The Dram Bell Society,

Great addition to any French oak whisky lovers profile. The nose here excels far past the palate and finish but all three are very well balanced with the wine influence from the wood. Sampled these with 2 other French oak finished bourbons and this one took first!!
