A very pleasant Caol Ila wearing its age gracefully. Smoky, spicy and woody (but not too woody) - a good combination.

Tasting Notes

  • Tasting Notes by TF

Nose:  Roasted cereal notes at first, then some red apple aromas.  Hint of apricots, gingery oak notes, cedarwood and vanilla.  Chocolate and clove.  The peat is medicinal and restrained woodsmoke

Palate:  Polished peat attack.  Intense flavours, good weight in the mouth.  The peat is more iodiney now and there are more peppery, spicy flavours from the chewy oak, which becomes quite dominant mid-palate.

Finish:  Long, warming and smoky like a log bonfire.

Comment:  Very good, as long as you like oaky malts (which I do).  Some pleasing rough edges.  A hit.

  • Bottler's Tasting Notes

"Despite its age, it is still maintaining a full, rich, creamy Islay'd olfactory experience - softly/subtly leading to peated barley, grist, mash and warm damp earth.  The palate begins attractively hot and edgy - splitting to the cheeks and below the tongue with an evident salty, briny character and a late paprika and peppery warmth.  The big, round, full finish is oily, tarry, ashy, creamy and smoked (being far younger in style and more phenolic than an Islay at this age should be)."
