Another instant classic from Foursquare distillery. This rich, intense blend of pot and column-distilled rums was matured in a combination of ex-Bourbon barrels and sherry casks for 12 years in the tropical heat of the Caribbean. Expect lots of caramelised brown sugar, and baked apple that give way to deeper notes of polished oak, black tea and leather.

Also referred to as the Fortunate Isles, Elysium is a heavenly realm celebrated in ancient Greek philosophy and poetry. A fitting name for this example of Barbados rum at its best. Strictly limited and exclusive to The Whisky Exchange, this is an essential bottle for any rum lover.

Foursquare distillery has risen over the past decade to be one of the most popular in Barbados and the most respected in the world. The distillery team is led by Richard Seale, the latest generation of a family whose Barbadian rum history stretches back a hundred years.

A New Era

The Seales were rum merchants and blenders until the the 1990s, when they took the plunge and built their own distillery. Sat on the site of an old sugar factory and surrounded by sugar cane fields, Foursquare is the perfect mix of old and new world, with a modern distillery making old-fashioned, richly flavoured rums that are loved around the globe.

    • Nose

      Aromas of old leather armchairs, burnt brown sugar, caraway and cinnamon, joined by notes of freshly polished chestnut, sultanas, dried apple and black tea.

    • Palate

      Round and rich with cooked brown sugar, soft spices, vanilla and apple strudel, followed by roasted chestnuts on the finish.

    Beautiful tasting Rum, very similar to Doorly's 14 year old. But the flavours are amplified and there is a more complex shoe/book polish taste from this Rum Fire. I would advise adding 5ml of water to your dram to tone down the initial impact of the liquor and unlock the other complex flavours contained within this particular bottling. There is a very oily /esther mouth feel, and the 60% ABV really assists to bring those complex flavours. The smell is excellent, very complex and a Rum I would recommend.

    Deep, dark and rich and typically Foursquare. Not particularly complex, a considerable but pleasant burn, though a little sharp too. Not as interesting as Indelible or as fulfilling as 2009, but enjoyable in and of itself.
