Balvenie 17 Year Old / Week of Peat
Product Description

A sweet and smoky 17-year-old single malt from Balvenie Stories collection, made during the one week of the year that the distillery uses peated malt. Aromas of sweet peat smoke, butterscotch, delicate flowers and honey fill the nose, complemented by notes of oaky vanilla, orange zest, blossom honey, sweet cream and rich, sweet peat smoke throughout the palate.

The Balvenie Stories collection is designed to bring to life the tales of 'character, endeavour and craft' of those at Balvenie through the generations. The Week of Peat is inspired by the tradition, started in 2002, of distilling peated malt for only one week every year.

Balvenie

The Week of Peat

Peated whisky isn’t the first thing you might think of when you hear the name Speyside. But a trip to the island of Islay inspired Balvenie distillery manager Ian Miller to reappraise the region’s relationship with smoke. He sourced peat from the village of New Pitsligo, an hour east of Dufftown, and began experimenting with it in the Balvenie maltings. Through careful trials, he and the rest of the team were able to produce whisky that wrapped the classic distillery character in a blanket of smoke. As a result, the kilns at Balvenie now burn peat for one week a year at the end of the distilling season – hence, the week of peat.

The Balvenie Stories

Generations of craftspeople have built the Balvenie that we know today, and the Balvenie Stories series honours them by keeping their stories alive. Passed down from generation to generation, these tales explore their expertise, their innovations and their mark on the spirit. From new casks and inspiring landscapes, to experiments with recipes and royal roses, this series is a love letter to the people of the distillery that is written in whisky.

About Balvenie

One of the original seven stills of Dufftown, Balvenie has been in business since 1892. It’s storied history is full of experimentation, a spirit of curiosity that has been passed down through the generations. Though the distillery boasts an open-minded approach to distilling and maturation, it also maintains a connection with tradition. Today it is one of only seven distilleries in Scotland to operate a floor maltings on-site. It’s not the easiest way to get malted barley, or the cheapest, but having direct control over the raw materials has allowed Balvenie to remain creative. The experiments taking place there today are sure to become the Balvenie stories of tomorrow.

    G Mac,

I am a big fan of Balvenie as a Speyside and also of Isla y malts. These things are always subjective however I feel that in this case the pieat overwhelms the delicate flavours of Balvenie. On the other hand, it’s nice to get a flavour of what Speyside may have been like many moons ago.
