The 'original' sets a high standard for Highland whisky, and has gone from strength to strength since its slightly controversial packaging redesign a few years ago. Medium-bodied and gently warming, with pleasant spicy notes.Tasting Notes (2)
Tasting Notes by Stuart P
Soft, clean and refreshing: lemon sherbert and apricots, with honeyed fruit and a touch of toffee and vanilla. Gentle and satisfying.
A little weightier on the palate, with honey and malt, banana bread and subtle sweet spices. Clean and well balanced.
The honeyed fruit fades softly, and the finish is whistle-clean.
A textbook whisky, this – well made, beautifully balanced, delicate but still flavoursome.
Producer's Tasting Notes
Imagine yourself in an Italian garden surrounded with mandarin, lemon, apple, pear and peach trees, their fruit ripening in the sun. Add to this the scent of vanilla ice cream, then enjoy the herbal aromas of geranium and wild mint growing nearby.
Add water to The Original and you wander into a flower garden with lemony bergamot, apricot and mandarin. Floral notes of geranium, sweet honeysuckle and piquant narcissus mix with mint and the herbal essence of eucalyptus, nutmeg and ginger.
Savour the fruits of the Italian garden as creamy vanilla slips like liquid silk over the tongue as peaches and cream, mandarins and lemons effervesce in the mouth.
Aromatic essences of fennel and nutmeg tantalise with crumbly almond and coconut that gives way to a nectar that envelops all the fruit, spice and nut flavours in a honeyed caress.
The charming sweetness of delicious juices is left on the tongue.

This is my go-to malt, it is simple, smooth but with character and has a wonderful taste.
This is my favorite almost every week drinker. Except when Aberlour is my favorite every weeker. I go between the two, but this is my number one. I drink this more than anything else. It’s oak. It’s vanilla. It is scotch that brings me back to what the smell of what people were saying was good scotch back when I was a wee lad, drinking apple juice. It’s that fruit that doesn’t really exist, except in scotch. From a part of the malt that only exists in some scotches. The first time I drank this was when it first became legal in the US back in the early or mid 2000’s. It got to me at a time where going out to the bars and drinking whatever beer and getting drunk was not really the thing anymore because we were now in our mid to later 20’s. We were just getting the taste for bourbon and whiskeys. Cognacs and wines, And better alcohols not just to get drunk. This always hit me as just right, because I get the good elements of bourbon, without the taste of the sour mash. I hate sour mash. Hate it. I am drinking this right now. All I can say is it just always has me getting flavors that just work. That fruit that doesn’t really exist, which I see as something like a pink kiwi - it is there, in between the woodiness, vanilla and hints of bourbon sweetness. I get the taste of the dry, flaking outside wood on an aged bourbon barrel and it tastes good with the sweet, the vanilla, the fruit and oak. Any time I drink the 12 or 14 year expressions, it leaves me kicking myself for not getting this. Overall, if you ask me, this is the best baseline starting expression there is. There’s other “better” stuff out there for special occasions. But I’d still rather be drinking this most of the time.
For non peat, non sherry cask whisky’s, this one is very good.
My times crossword dram.Pleasant but nothing going on to disturb my concentration
I’m an Islay rather than Speyside fan and Glenmorangie 10 is up there with my favourites that are three times the price. So easy to like with it’s smooth and comforting vanillary feel in the mouth. Can’t go wrong with this one and you can get it at pretty much every half decent every corner shop. Five stars from me.
