A 1982 Port Ellen – aged 40 years – was released in February 2023 by independent bottler Hunter Laing as part of the Eidolon Trilogy. Limited to only 403 bottles, this special release was designed to build up the anticipation for the reopening of the iconic Islay distillery that closed in 1983. The nose brings out the effect of a sherry cask – notes of rich red fruit, cocoa, cherry, pecan, caramel, and sweet pipe tobacco greet you right from the start. Dark chocolate, espresso, citrus, polished wood, fragrant tobacco, and lovely Islay peat smoke complete an intense palate that leads to a lingering finish with tar, honey, black tea, and chocolate almonds. A splash of water further opens up the subtle herbal notes and hints of fresh oysters.
