Product Description

A long-aged smoky Ledaig, bottled at 25 years old exclusively for The Whisky Exchange. We're big fans of Ledaig – Tobermory's smoky spirit – and when we tried this exclusive single cask we had to have it all for ourselves. It was distilled in 1997 and bottled in 2023, and the 25 years in cask have allowed it to develop into a complex and elegant whisky with a solidly smoky backbone.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

  • Billy Abbott, The Whisky Exchange

    • Nose

You don’t need to get close to the glass to smell this! Warm engines, school plimsolls and burning ferns – all in a good way. Roasted, stewed and flame-grilled apples build through the middle, with pleasantly dirty smoke, coal scuttles and creosote. Smouldering mint and a touch of menthol develop.

    • Palate

Surprisingly restrained after the monster nose, with liquorice, mint and menthol balanced by pineapple and passion fruit. Coal dust lingers at the back along with sweet mint fondant, candied orange, singed raisins and blueberry muffins.

    • Finish

A burst of engine oil leads to wine gum fruitiness, mint, menthol and bung cloth. Sweet pink shrimp sweets explode as everything else fades to leave soft blueberry notes.

  • Cara Laing, Douglas Laing

    • Nose

Perfectly smoked. Detect bacon rashers, blackcurrants, blueberries, and burnt rubber

    • Palate

Scottish strawberry jam on burnt buttered brioche with raisins and orange hard candy.

    • Finish

Long and lingering with salted dark chocolate, dried apricots and sweet malted barley.

Ledaig 1997

25 Year Old Xtra Old Particular

Ledaig, smoky whisky made at Tobermory distillery, is one of our favourite whiskies and the distillery’s Ledaig 18 Year Old even took the top spot as our Whisky of the Year 2023. However, it’s in independent bottlings that you often find one-off gems, and this exclusive release doesn’t disappointment. While independent Ledaig releases are often young and punchy, this long-aged 25-year-old bucks that trend and shows what happens to the distillery’s spirit with some time in the cask. Rich, fruity, smoky and elegant, it’s a world away from the youthful bottlings that we also love, offering something refined and very very tasty.
