Product Description

A limited-edition single malt that was launched to celebrate Ardbeg Day 2023. This experimental whisky was designed by Dr Bill Lumsden, who decided to remove the copper purifier from a still to unleash the heavy vapours. The result is an expression that distorts Ardbeg’s classic balance between fruit and smoke. The palate offers notes of peppermint, cardamom, dark chocolate and eucalyptus, brought together by untameable smokiness.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

  • Billy Abbott, The Whisky Exchange

    • Nose

Rich and meaty peat smoke with orange and lime peels, a touch of rubber and some mulchy leaves. Tar and creosote develop along with muddy peat. Iodine, menthol and new leather notes build along with gravelly minerality.

    • Palate

Smoky chocolate kicks things off along with a handful of gravel. The rich and earthy notes from the nose return with lime jelly, menthol, and liquorice and blackcurrant sweets. Brown sugar and overripe banana hide underneath. With some time in the glass, pine needles and mulchy leaves develop, joined by liquorice and freshly roasted coffee beans.

    • Finish

Sweet and fruity at first, with foam bananas and creamy chocolate leading to milky coffee, tar and gravel.

    • Comments

Ardbeg's recent obsession with tinkering with production in their special releases has paid off here – this is definitely Ardbeg, but not how you've tried it before. The classic blend of fruit, minerality and smoke is complemented here by a huge back-end that's a mile away from Ardbeg's usual elegance (as much as a peaty slap can be called elegant). The extra weight shows what the purifier gives to Ardbeg's character, and makes me wonder if there's more of this spirit hiding in the warehouse waiting for more special projects...

    Larry M,

The hallmark musky dusty whisper is gone and the treacle is more burnt than in the usual Ardbegs. This could be the best Lagavulin ever?? As an Ardbeg it is less complex than we are used to??
