Product Description

This elegantly sherried Redbreast was aged entirely in second-fill oloroso casks, making for a complex dram that balances notes of dried fruit and nuts with the distinctive spiciness of Irish pot still whiskey. After almost two decades in the Midleton distillery warehouses in County Cork, it shows excellent maturity with fine tannins and hints of dark chocolate. Outside of the celebrated core range, there are precious few Redbreast whiskies in the wild, so we are particularly proud to offer this limited-edition bottling exclusively to customers of The Whisky Exchange.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

  • From the Producer

    • Nose

Opens with notes of black cherry and vanilla, accompanied by light dustings of nutmeg with a sherry nuttiness softly lingering in the background. The pot still spices continue to build along with delicate dried herbs, all gently resting on a solid oak foundation.

    • Palate

Delicate tannins at first, with the fruits slowly building over time adding hints of stewed apples and prune. The tannins continue to evolve adding dark chocolate undertones that work in harmony with a subtle honey-derived sweetness, complimenting the pot still spices and red liquorice confectionary notes.

    • Finish

The fading fruits and subtle sweetness allow the oak and sherry seasoning to have the last word, with the tannins lingering until the very end.

  • Billy Abbott, The Whisky Exchange

    • Nose

Weighty and rich with layers of fruit: plump sultanas, dried apricots and baked apples leading to cherries and berries. Pot-still spice and green leaves hide underneath along with cinder toffee and sandalwood.

    • Palate

Intense fruit to start, wrapped in a spicy oak overcoat. Apples and pears with a touch of mango and pineapple cake, all followed by sultanas and raisins. Baking spice and toffee notes build.

    • Finish

      Lingering fruit and spice.

Redbreast

The first Redbreast whiskies were born in the late-19th century out of a collaboration between wine merchants W&A Gilbey and distillers John Jameson & Son. By maturing Jameson’s fine pot still spirit in used sherry casks – something the Gilbeys had in abundance – the partnership created a distinctive style of whiskey that is famous around the world to this day. Even in the lean years of the 20th century, when all but one distillery stopped producing Irish pot still whiskey, the perennial Redbreast never went away.

Bottlings of mature pot still whiskey like this one can only come from Midleton distillery, where they never stopped filling sherry casks with this uniquely Irish spirit.

    Jay Trafford,

Not as smooth as the 21 year old, but still a great whisky. Exceedingly fast shipping!

    Marinus Klaasse,

12 year old Irish whiskey with toasted oak and sherry undertones. It makes me so happy.
