Method and Madness

Midleton may be one of the oldest names in whiskey, but the team at this venerable distillery prove that tradition doesn’t need to hinder innovation. The Method and Madness range launched in 2017 to showcase new and experimental whiskies produced in collaboration with the distillery’s apprentices. These have included expressions matured in unconventional casks made from maple wood, hickory and rare Japanese mizunara oak. The Method and Madness Mezcal cask is another release that reminds us at even after centuries of the development, Irish whiskey continues to evolve.

What is Mezcal?

The story of this one-of-a-kind Irish whiskey begins in Mexico, with six casks of mezcal. This traditional spirit is made from the fermented, distilled heart of the agave plant. Many producers will roast their agaves in pits or stone ovens, imparting a rich and smoky character to their spirit. That distinctive smokiness remained in the those six casks as they made the long journey to County Cork to be filled with Midleton’s fruity, spicy pot still whiskey.
