Product Description

Selected and bottled exclusively for The Whisky Exchange, this richly-flavoured single malt comes to us from Seattle, Washington. It showcases Westland distillery’s signature five malt mashbill aged for five years in new American oak and finished for just shy of three years in a fresh Marsala cask. The influence of this sweet Sicilian wine shows itself with notes of sticky dried fruit and toasted nuts, Italian pastries and citrus oils. Since its founding in 2010, Westland has become a champion of provenance in grain and oak and a leader in the emerging American single malt movement.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

  • Dawn Davies MW

    • Nose

Dates, raisins, sticky toffee, orange peel, plum pudding with kirsh soaked cherries and a top note of rancio.

    • Palate

A lovely lick of saltiness with rum and raisin, hints of cherry, sugar coated plums and orange peel.

    • Finish

Long and rich with nutty Marsala notes.

  • Billy Abbott, The Whisky Exchange

    • Nose

Rich caramel and fruity dark chocolate to start: posh Rolos. Brown sugar is followed by liquorice and berry fruit – blackberries and blackcurrants – with a touch of polished oak. Raisin-studded fruit cake hides at the back.

    • Palate

Stacks of rich fruit and dark sweetness: stewed peaches and apples with raisins, sultanas, dates and prunes all drizzled with toffee sauce. Dark bready notes develop, spread with cherry jam, lightly charred and sprinkled with hazelnuts.

    • Finish

Chocolate-covered liquorice and cherry jam fade to leave fruit cake topped with glacé cherries.

Mad About Marsala

As well as embracing innovation in distilling, Westland has held onto some of the traditional elements of single malt production in Scotland. One of the most obvious is the casks used to mature its whiskey, which are not governed by the same strict regulations as America’s bourbon producers. This specially-selected whiskey was first matured in American oak, before being moved to an ex-Marsala cask for three years, the sweet wine from Sicily imparting layers of fruit, sticky pastries and rich nuttiness that compliment Westland’s creamy character.

About Westland Distillery

To hear Westland tell it, the mountainous and forested landscapes of America’s Pacific Northwest bear a striking resemblance to the glens of the Old World – Scotland. It was these resemblances which inspired Westland to strike its own path through whiskey; an exploration of traditional single malt-making techniques with a view to produce a spirit which remains uniquely American in character.

Harnessing the raw materials and culture of its home in Seattle, Washington,Westland has created its own signature five-malt mashbill and uses both ex-sherry casks and American oak barrels to mature its whiskey.
