Product Description

This 31-year-old single malt was produced at the Braes of Glenlivet distillery just two years before its name change to Braeval in 1994. It’s always a pleasure to see casks of such great age and maturity from one of Speyside’s unsung heroes and this one offers a particularly fine example of the distillery character. Drawn from a single first-fill American oak barrel, it has a perfumed nose with aromas of honeysuckle and rose that give way to stewed apples, Jamaican ginger cake and candied apricots before a fresh piney finish.

Braes of Glenlivet

In the 18th century, the vast pasturelands that surround the modern Braeval distillery were a hotspot for illicit distilling. The area’s isolation made it the perfect place to watch for the excise man while making whisky by the Scots gallon. Chivas Brothers built Braes of Glenlivet (as it was initially known) in the 20th century to provide crucial light and floral components for its blends during a boom for Scotch whisky. The first official Braeval hit our shelves in 2017, with only a handful of others appearing since, making gems like this 31-year-old single cask a real treat for whisky enthusiasts.

Lost in Time

These eight casks, selected by Chivas Brothers and The Whisky Exchange, showcase some of Speyside’s great distilleries. We have chosen to bottle them at different ages – most of them coming from the final vintages of the 20th century – but all at a point in their maturation where the distillery character is perfectly clear. As casks filled before the great single malt boom of the early 2000s become increasingly scarce and valuable, we are proud to offer a snapshot of these Speyside distilleries at their best.
