Tasting Notes
Tasting Notes
Billy Abbott, The Whisky Exchange
Nose
Ginger nut biscuits and Crunch Creams, with a background of Nice biscuits and shortbread, Layers of austere fruitiness follow, with green apples and crunchy pears joined by hints of pine and fresh green leaves. Sweet sultana notes develop, balanced by tart cape gooseberry.
Palate
Tarte tatin and salted caramel lead, with unripe pears and vanilla. Liquorice and mint fondant build, along with the shortbread from the nose and a touch of toffee. Green leaf and mineral notes hide behind.
Finish
Polished oak, sharp apple and apple skin at first. Custardy touches develop.
Berry Bros. & Rudd
The nose opens with rich autumnal aromas of stewed apples and warming spices. On the palate, layers of juicy raisin and a whisper of vanilla are revealed, all wrapped in a warming sherry influence. The finish is a slow retreat of lingering sweetness, with a subtle oak presence that mingles with an array of pulpy orchard fruits. A splendid showcase of spirit and cask acting in unison.
This single-cask exclusive, bottled for us by Berry Bros. & Rudd, shows off the Macduff’s dual nature, with 21 years in cask allowing its fruity character to develop, while also giving it a refined elegance.
Macduff distillery is one of Scotland’s lesser known producers, although its whisky is much better known, bottled under the name of Glen Deveron. It’s rare to see independent bottlings and we are very pleased to have been able to work with Berry’s to select this exclusive release.
About Berry Bros. & Rudd
Berry Bros. & Rudd is the world’s oldest wine and spirits merchants, founded 3 St James Street in London, the address where they still reside today, in 1698. While it started as a coffee shop, the company has sourced, matured and bottled wines and spirits for more than 200 years.
Over the decades, the company has been involved with numerous distilleries and blends, including Glenrothes and Cutty Sark, but is best known in modern times for its excellent range of single cask and small batch whiskies from around the world.
