Del Maguey single-village mezcals are very rare and highly sought-after, having picked up the title of World's Best Mezcal at the World Spirits Competition every year from 1999-2002. This bottle of Chichicapa was made in the village of the same name, and scored a hugely impressive 94 points from Wine Enthusiast.

Phenomenal stuff! The nose is huge (that's coming from a peathead), rich and complex with everything from crushed leaves to butter, really minerally water and large amounts of mint, and of course, a somewhat odd but very big smoke. On the palate this thing is quite the experience. Minerally, savoury (think chicken), minty/mentholy, big and vegetal, salty, oily, quite fruity towards the finish. Lovely aftertaste fairly reminiscent of Caol Ila. I have no idea what Anon underneath me gave this three stars for, this bottle is amazing!
Well. not that great, very, and I mean very oily and vegetal. it's supposed to appeal Islay single malt drinkers but as one, I didn't liked it at all (certainly given the price). but it does make a very nice (and expensive) margarita
This is amazing stuff. Almost impossible to believe it has not been aged, as it has all the complexity and smoke of an Islay malt. Add to this the salt and zing of tequila and you have a truly original drink.
