Product Description

The first addition to Ardbeg's ongoing range for a decade when introduced in 2017, An Oa is a combination of spirit aged in Pedro-Ximenez sherry casks and bourbon barrels. Married in a French-oak marrying vat, this is rounded and smoky with notes of toffee, aniseed, date and banana.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

  • Tasting notes by Billy Abbott (The Whisky Exchange)

    • Nose

Damp earth and leaves with softly building smokiness, lime peel, wine gums, limestone minerality, and a touch of swimming pools and sea spray freshness.

    • Palate

Sweet smoke and chocolate, tarry notes, bung cloth and dunnage warehouses. Rich sweetness cuts through the centre, wrapped with smoke. Gentle creaminess develops, with caffe latte dusted with cocoa and icing sugar. Water adds to the creaminess with toffee sweetness.

    • Finish

A burst of berry fruit disappears to reveal stony minerality, brine and a pinch of white pepper.

    • Comment

More approachable than the 10yo but without losing any depth. Rich and smoky, with everything from rich coffee and chocolate to fresh sea breezes.

  • Tasting Notes from the Producer

    • Nose

Rounded and subtly smoky (applewood), with creamy toffee, aniseed, treacle and dates. A curious suggestion of juicy fruits, such as peach and banana. With a drop of water, reminders of Ardbeg’s classic fragrance: lime, pine resin, fennel, saddle soap and tar. A gentle waxiness, like fragrant candlewax, and hints of smoked herbs.

    • Palate

A smooth, creamy texture leads into a huge syrupy sweetness, flavours of milk chocolate, treacle toffee, aniseed, orange and smoky tea leaves. Gentle, sweet spices (nutmeg and cinnamon), some cigar smoke, and a very unusual flavour of grilled artichokes. Long and sweet, with floral overtones, mint toffee and some gentle malty, biscuit notes.

    • Finish

Lingering, seductive, gentle yet intense, with flavours of aniseed, hickory and distant subtle smoke.

Review: Ardbeg An Oa (46.6% ABV) ?The Concept Named after the Mull of Oa in the south of Islay, this expression acts as a "sanctuary" within the Ardbeg core range. It is designed to bridge the gap between the raw intensity of the 10-year-old and the complexity of the older releases. ?The Craftsmanship The true magic of this dram lies in the Gathering Vat, where spirits matured in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, bourbon barrels, and French oak are married together to find their perfect harmony. I would like to give a standing ovation to the Master Blender behind this creation; the balance achieved here is nothing short of artistic. ?Aroma & Texture The nose is a beautiful dance of opposites. You are greeted by classic Ardbeg peat smoke, but it is immediately softened by notes of creamy butterscotch, aniseed, and hints of dates. The mouthfeel is superbly smooth and syrupy, coating the palate in a velvety layer of oily goodness. ?Palate On the palate, it is a symphony of flavors. The initial smoky punch is accompanied by sweet milk chocolate, orange zest, and subtle notes of banana and toffee. The integration of the PX sherry influence provides a rich, fruity backbone without ever overshining the peat. ?The Finish The finish is where this whisky truly shines, showing remarkable length and "juiciness." It lingers long on the palate with a rich, fading hickory smoke combined with a deep floral honey sweetness. The aftertaste is incredibly refined and balanced, leaving you with a final, satisfying coating of salted caramel and charred oak. ?Final Verdict Ardbeg An Oa is a masterpiece of equilibrium. It is smoky enough for the die-hard peat heads, yet complex and sweet enough for those who appreciate a more rounded, sophisticated profile. It is the perfect closing act for any serious tasting session.

I didn't get the tasting notes it claims. Not unpleasant at all, but a little bland. So it's ok.

I must have had a bottle from an unusual batch. For me it took about a year to calm down, the smoke was overpowering.
