  • North British 1991 / 34 Year Old / Thompson Bros for The Whisky Exchange
Product Description

A well-aged grain whisky from Edinburgh's North British distilery, bottled exclusively for The Whisky Exchange by the Thompson Brothers.

While it's getting a lot more love than it once did, grain whisky still doesn't get the spotlight it deserves, and when the Thompsons asked if we wanted to bottle this 34-year-old whisky, we jumped at the chance. Its more than three decades of maturation have allowed it to develop a softly spicy and fruity complexity, the mark of great grain whisky. It's bottled at cask strength, and its low ABV has been reached by natural evaporation rather than dilution, concentrating the flavour of the whisky and adding to its intensity and complexity.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

  • Billy Abbott, The Whisky Exchange

    • Nose

Dutch caramel waffles with extra-dark brown sugar on a freshly varnished wooden plate. Butter toffees and buttermints develop, along with a small pile of dried fruit: sultanas, blackcurrants and apricots. Soft golden-syrup sweetness sits underneath everything.

    • Palate

Soft but more intense than the strength would suggest, with a creamy texture that is complemented by gentle oaky spice: toffee and caramel with cinnamon and a touch of charred wood. The char notes are tempered by blackcurrants and stewed blueberries, all sat on top of a bar of bittersweet dark chocolate.

    • Finish

Soft char and spice lead to spiced baked apples and crunchy toffee apples. Polished oak, dark chocolate and cinder toffee linger.

A really excellent example of the important but often-overlooked North British. Pleasingly complex notes of inverted sugar (think golden syrup, caramac) with a little barley sugar on the finish. Pleasant edge of wood-spice and char as it opens.
