LedaigSamples
The distillery was originally founded way back in 1798 - under the name Ledaig - by John Sinclair. While it saw a few decades of success, it fell silent in 1837 and rarely managed more than two sequential decades of operation until the 1990s.
At various points over that 150 year period it was used as a canteen, a power station and a cheese warehouse. Out of one particularly ill-fated ownership in the 1970s came the new name of Tobermory. Ledaig was destined for the history books
The distillery was purchased by Burn Stewart, who reopened the distillery in 1993 and have kept it running ever since, despite being bought by CL Financial in 2002 and sold on to Distell in 2013. Seeking to distinguish Tobermory's peated and unpeated offerings, the name of Ledaig was revived in 2007 with a 10 Year Old single malt. This was supplemented by an 18 Year Old in 2015, and there are a steady stream of interesting limited releases as well.
The house character of Ledaig is boldly peaty - bonfire smoke on top of honeyed fruit and floral notes, with sea salt reminding you of its coastal nature. Younger releases are pepperier, and even slightly phenolic, as the peat hasn’t been tamed yet. Older age statements tend to be bigger and more rounded out, especially when they’ve spent time in sherry casks.
