Bruichladdich B Corp

Bruichladdich a force for good

In May 2020 Bruichladdich Distillery – home of the Octomore, Port Charlotte and Bruichladdich whisky brands and Botanist Gin – became the first Scotch whisky distillery to be a certified B Corporation.

Becoming a B-Corp, as they are commonly known, is a lengthy process that involves demonstrating an organisation’s high performance against a large number of social and environmental criteria. Read on to discover how Bruichladdich achieved this historic certification, and what it means for Islay.

What is a B-Corp?

A B-Corp is a certification issued by B Lab, a global non-profit network dedicated to transforming the global economy to benefit all people, communities and the planet.

To achieve certification, a company must:

demonstrate high social and environmental performance, achieving a B Impact Assessment score of 80 or above, as well as passing the B Lab risk review.

make a legal commitment by changing its governance structure to be accountable to stakeholders, as well as shareholders, and also receive benefit corporation if available in its jurisdiction.

exhibit transparency and allow information about its performance measured against B Lab’s standards to be publicly available on its official B Corp profile.

Striving for better

Since officially receiving its B-Corp certification in May 2020, Bruichladdich has implemented four pillars on which it is focussing on as it works towards a more positive impact.

Energy and emission

reducing carbon emissions and introducing greener sources of energy

Community

working with the local community to provide a team of passionate people

Agriculture and biodiversity

support local farmers and preserve the island’s natural biodiversity

Packaging and waste

a mission to use less and reuse more, offering customers the option to receive their bottles without presentation tubes

The Botanist Foundation

Named after the distillery's gin, The Botanist Foundation was created to protect and preserve the people, flora and wildlife of Islay, including the plants that are foraged for use in making The Botanist gin.

The local community and landscape of Islay is at the centre of The Botanist Foundation’s work, supporting local schools and institutions to give back to the community and raise a new generation of passionate individuals to look after the island.

B-Corp Certified Products

While the first Scotch whisky distillery to receive its B-Corp certification, Bruichladdich is not the only wine and spirits company to have this certification. A good number of producers have qualified as B-Corporations, and we have rounded up a list of products from these so that you can choose from products that have a positive impact on our world.
