Loch Lomond

The Spirit of The Open

The Open Golf 2023 Royal Liverpool

Loch Lomond distillery has been sponsoring The Open Championship – the world’s oldest golf tournament – since 2018 and continues as The Spirit of The Open in 2023, the 151st meeting.

This year’s tournament is being played at Royal Liverpool and Loch Lomond has created a range of whiskies to celebrate both The Open and the course.

The distillery partnered with its golf ambassador – legendary player Colin Montgomerie – to create this celebratory whisky. It’s matured initially in American oak casks before being finished in ex-Rioja red wine casks, adding layers of berries and dark chocolate to Loch Lomond’s signature orchard fruit and soft smoke.

This 2000-vintage whisky shows a different side of the distillery’s character. Made with organic barley and offering less smokiness than others in the Loch Lomond stable, its 22 years in organic-certified American oak casks have amplified the fruitiness of the spirit, revealing pineapple, mango and honey.

Rounding out the year’s celebratory releases is this very small batch 25-year-old whisky – only 151 bottles available worldwide. Distilled in 1998 and initially matured in refill bourbon casks, it was then finished for 12 months in oloroso sherry casks. The result is a deep and complex whisky, combining fresh peach and pineapple notes with dark spice and rich dried fruit.

About Loch Lomond

Loch Lomond is almost certainly Scotland’s most versatile distillery. The malt distillery – as there is also a grain distillery next door – features three different types of still: traditional swan-necked pots, straight-necked pots and a coffey still.

When these varied stills are combined with differing types of barley (both peated and unpeated) and different collection strengths from the stills, a wide range of styles of whisky are created. This gives the blending team, led by master blender Michael Henry, a vast array of flavours to draw from when crafting their whiskies.
