Spotlight on New Zealand Whisky

New Zealand today is home to one of the most exciting whisky scenes in the world. The number of whisky distilleries across the North and South Islands is growing rapidly, with a new generation of producers exploring the relationship between tradition and innovation. Techniques born in Scotland and Ireland are being adapted to include local flavours and distillers are banding together to protect their nascent whisky culture. Below are some of the leading lights of New Zealand whisky, beginning with a small operation in a brewery on the outskirts of Auckland.

Thomson Whisky

Rachael and Mathew Thomson began their whisky journey in 2009, bottling the remaining casks from Dunedin’s Willowbank distillery, which fell silent in the 1990s. From there, they began to experiment kilning barley on their barbecue, brewing wash and imagining what the character of a Kiwi single malt might be. They launched their own distillery in the back of Riverhead’s Hallertau brewery in 2014 and have since released whiskies made with barley smoked over native manuka wood and South Island peat and explored maturation in New Zealand Pinot Noir casks. After earning a cult following around the world, this emerging brand was named The Whisky Exchange Rising Star 2024.
