Customer Rating

Introduced in 2010, after cask strength versions in 2004 and 2005, this is the first officially-bottled Caol Ila 25yo to be bottled at 43%. It's nice to see growing recognition for this excellent distillery, and this is a very welcome addition to the official range, with a rich, gentle mouthfeel and restrained, coal-esque phenols.

Caol Ila 25 Year Old Reviews

Tasting Notes

  • Tasting Notes by Rocky

Nose: Complex nose of smoke, liquorice, vanilla and intense freshly-mown grass,

Palate: Rich and creamy texture with notes of toffee and caramel (as it seems is the distillery’s signature flavour profile), with leathery notes coming to the fore towards the end.

Finish: A long but subtle finish, with the leather and sweeter notes continuing from the palate.

    Comment: A superb all rounder.

I have a fairly extensive collection and decided to add the Caol Ila 25 to it since my brother had spoke highly of it. Bottom line I like it a lot! It is very smooth when drunk neat and still has the complexity of the 25 year old scotch. It is somewhat expensive, but one I would recommend for the serious single malt lover to have in their collection to enjoy for yourself and with others.

Quality whisky; delicious and dances on the tongue. Best as a first dram of the night, you have to force yourself to move on.

Tried it before I knew the price. So without this preconception I really enjoyed it for what it was.It followed a couple Of drams of other well known, much enjoyed Islay heavy hitters, and was like a more delicate and integrated version of each... Will investigate the 25 YO Port Askaig next time I'm at TWE!

Agreeing with the fellow that recommends Port Askaig. Tasted next to each other you have to be heavily biased to choose this bottling over the PA especially considering the price difference. This is not at all a bad whisky but it's also rather unimpressive for a bottle of this price. The same goes for the latest Laphroaig 25.

Tasted this at the Caol Ila distillery a couple of months ago, and was able to get a bottle. This is a wonderful but also an extremely delicate whisky, even more so than the 18yo. To be drunk neat at the beginning of an evening. If you drink anything beforehand (even wine) then this will taste over diluted.

The Port Askaig 25 is very good, but IMO does not stand up well to the past OB Caol Ila 25s. I haven't tried this one yet, but hopefully will do soon.
