Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

  • Producer's Notes

    • Character

Medium weight with a texture that is smooth, strong and smokey. This is a spirit with fire in its soul and warmth in its heart.

    • Colour

      Bronzed mahogany.

    • Nose

The sherry and peat are the first to rise; they warm and seduce the senses into an Islay frame of mind with little slipstreams of lemon peel, black pepper, eucalyptus, cinnamon, heather and mint - all being caressed and cooled by the Atlantic coastal notes which merge beautifully with the earthy flora and fauna aromatics of the peat moors, heaths and woodlands of this special place.

    • Palate

Slowly the combination of both bourbon and sherry wood arrives in an unhurried wave of sticky dates, mellow Oloroso, chocolate orange, smoked malt, roasted walnuts and dark toffee. At this point the palate surrenders to seduction by the most handsome spirit it has ever encountered.

    • Finish

As you near your journey’s end, you will notice there is a subtle change in the flavour as the American bourbon wood sunsets the experience with a brilliant flash of Spanish flair - dark, passionate, sweet and desirable.

    • Mood

      Meandering winter walk.

It took me a long time to appreciate this one from my current 40+ collection of Single Malts. Sherry and Peat but not very well balanced but seemed to improve with time.

Strongly peated but easier to get on with than some of the more powerful high phenol offerings. Easy to drink and unlikely to offend. I'm generally a fan of the peated offerings from Bruichladdich and Port Charlotte and this lives up to expectations.

I tend struggle a bit with Bruichladdich (unlike Ardbeg, Laphroaig and Caol Ila) and I struggled with this. But my brother thought is was pretty good, and he happily finished the bottle for me. (The quadruple-distilled stuff is my favourite Bruichladdich to date. Shame they've stopped making it.)
