Tasting Notes

  • Tasting notes by Billy Abbott (The Whisky Exchange)

Nose: Burnt raisins and dark fruit cake, barrel char and black treacle. It lightens in the glass, with sultanas and rich toffee notes slowly building, followed by rum'n'raisin fudge, salty liquorice liqueur and dry oloroso sherry. Water brings out milk chocolate notes.

Palate: Thick and juicy, with an initial burst of sweet cherries, red grapes and blackcurrants. Then comes a smack of darker flavours: liquorice, polished oak, tobacco, barrel char and almost-savoury fruit cake. Lighter notes shine through from time to time: light fruit cake, sweet cinnamon and clove, nutmeg and singed orange peel. It swims well, and water calms things down to reveal more toffee and complex layers of orange: peel and pith, flesh, juice and jelly.

Finish: Burnt raisins slowly sweeten to become Garibaldi biscuits and spiced fruit cake. The spice lingers.

Comment: Considering the high strength, this is surprisingly approachable. It is still a bit of a beast – a classic sherry bomb – but also takes water very well.

No, the 67.1% is not a typo. Wowza. Reminds me a lot of a sherry Kavalan Solist. A fair bit of water and time in the glass is necessary, in my opinion. I get just a touch of Glenlivet character but it is truly sherry at the core. It could benefit from a good few years longer but is an absolutely great example of an unapologetic sherry beast at a seriously reasonable price. 4.5/5
