Starward Single Cask 2012 / 7 Year Old / TWE Exclusive
Product Description

A seven-year-old Australian single malt from Starward distillery, bottled exclusively for The Whisky Exchange's 20th anniversary. Made in 2012, this whisky was matured in a single refill Apera cask – an Australian fortified wine, similar to Spanish sherry – before being bottled in 2019. Aromas of toffee, peach, pineapple, pear, sandalwood and vanilla custard fill the nose, with sharp lemon and golden sugar. The palate offers notes of caramel, cinnamon, nutmeg, stewed apples and raisins, developing black pepper, toffee, pineapple and milk chocolate.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

  • Billy Abbott, The Whisky Exchange

    • Nose

Cinder toffee, green leaves and fragrant peach lead. There’s a hint of char with a basket of fruit behind: pineapple, apple and pear. Perfumed oak and sandalwood build, along with vanilla custard dosed with a good squeeze of lemon. Creamy notes develop – Shreddies cereal and milk with a sprinkling of golden sugar.

    • Palate

Rich, rounded and thick. Rich caramel leads, punctuated by bursts of sweet cinnamon and nutmeg. Stewed apples and raisins roll in, along with toffee, black pepper and a touch of apple peel. The pineapple is back, both grilled and dried rings. Oaky spice sits at the back along with polished oak and touch of fragrant wood. Milk chocolate rounds things out, popped on top of a slice of banana bread.

    • Finish

The bananas linger, with spice and polished oak appearing and then fading.

    • Comment

Starward’s always been a fruity and chocolatey dram, but this shows even more fruit without losing that chocolate edge. Grown-up Australian whisky.

I can clearly see why The Whisky Exchange would ask Starward to make this bottle for them. It’s a beautiful colored whisky and nice the only problem I found is because it’s extremely strong at 59% ABV cask strength which is not my sort of drink usually I even tried it with a bit of water and I still found a bit to powerful on my pallete. Bottom line is that if you want a nice whisky and cask strength is not to strong for you then this is certainly worth trying it’s a good quality whisky.
