Product Description
This long-aged expression demonstrates how Glenrothes develops over many decades in oak. Even after 42 years it retains remarkable vibrancy, showing intense notes of mango and passionfruit on the nose before an oily palate of brown butter, cedar, citrus oils and earthy spices. Just 1,134 bottles were produced, a rare bottling of Glenrothes distilled in the early months of the 1980s.

Tasting Notes
Tasting Notes
Joe Rogers (The Whisky Exchange)
Nose
Intensely tropical with mango and passionfruit followed by stewed fruit notes of pineapple jam, orange marmalade and strawberry compote. There’s also a nutty side with sweet kaya toast, hazelnuts and a hint of dry amontillado sherry.
Palate
Big and oily with brown butter, demerara sugar and treacle toffee. Then tangerines, orange oil, dried peaches and sultanas. An earthier side emerges over time to ground those richer notes, bringing coriander seed, bay leaf, cedar and almonds.
Finish
Long and persistent with more caramelised sugars and earthy spices.
A Rare Beast 42 Year Old
This exceptional release of Glenrothes single malt was drawn from four refill casks laid down in 1980. As this distinctive Speyside whisky has always been in great demand, precious few examples from that era remain intact. For those lucky enough to own a bottle, the 42 Year Old offers a rare chance to experience Glenrothes at this level of maturity.
Born in the Highlands 42 Year Old
Glenrothes produces a heavyweight spirit with considerable ageing potential. This expression’s tropical fruit notes and overall freshness demonstrate just how well it develops over long decades in oak. The presentation box features artwork inspired by the topography surrounding the distillery. A fitting tribute to the Speyside region, whose cool climate shaped this remarkable whisky.

This stalwart distillery in the small town of Rothes, has been in business since 1879. Production there favours short fermentation and long, unhurried distillation to create a full-bodied new make with great affinity for sherry casks. While it spent much of its lifetime as a workhorse for blenders, recent years have seen Glenrothes’ whisky gain rightful acclaim as a high-tier single malt.
