Hibiki

Whisky blending is all about creating complexity and nuance. Traditionally, this means combining malt and grain whiskies of different origins and styles to achieve balance, contrast and harmony. But when Suntory’s founder Shinjiro Torii built the now-legendary Yamazaki in 1923, there were no other distilleries in Japan for him to source stock from. Which meant there was no way for him to make blends like the Scotch whiskies that had inspired him. It would be some years later – when Torii-san’s son Keizo was continuing his father’s legacy – that Suntory opened its second and third distilleries.

Perfect Harmony

Hakushu, on the slopes of Mount Kaikomagatake, provided new styles of malt whisky that could harmonise with those from Yamazaki. Chita in Nagoya produced the grain whisky that would give them both structure. By combining all three, Suntory produced the first true Japanese blended whiskies – a project that culminated in 1989 with the launch of Hibiki. The iconic blend in its 24-sided decanter helped to bring Suntory to the attention of the world. This special 100th anniversary bottling of Hibiki 21 Year Old marks a significant milestone in whisky history, making it a must-have for any collector.

The 100th Anniversary Editions

As we celebrate 100 years of Yamazaki distillery, we are proud to offer a number of limited-edition Suntory whiskies bottled to commemorate the occasion. Available while stocks last – when they’re gone, they’re gone.
